Why on earth would you ask a twenty-something for advice? Well, because this twenty-something has given advice every week for over three years, and I've gotten pretty darn good at it. When I look at how I spend my time, it's mostly a whole bunch of mentoring positions--Orientation Leader, Emory Digital Ambassador Mentor, Tour Guide, Spiritual Retreat Leader, Sorority Big Sister... it's a big part of who I am. I love to listen, and I've developed a knack for giving great advice.
It's those little moments when a freshman says I helped them choose Emory or a friend makes a spiritual breakthrough from my advice that a light comes on and I think "huh, this advice thing really works for me..." Hence, the Ask Katie portion of my blog! I want to be a resource for my community, and that starts by reaching out and asking if I can lend a hand.
So here I am--two listening ears all ready to go. Drop me a line, and I'll do my best to help!
Need advice as a prospective student applying for college?
For over three years, I've happily mentored hundreds of prospective students as they make their college decisions through my position as a tour guide.
What do I do if I don't know my major yet? How do I choose between two amazing universities? What kinds of things did you look for in a university?
Why Emory??
If there's a prospective student question out there, I've answered it. And I get awesome feedback! I can't tell you how many people have come up to me and said, "Wait I remember you! You were my tour guide. You helped me choose Emory!!" Talk about a happy feeling right there, knowing that you helped someone make a major life decision.
If you're a prospective student navigating the admissions process, let me be your go-to source. No matter how small or big the question, I'm always happy to help.
Need advice as an incoming freshman or a current college student?
I have also given advice to incoming freshman for four years as a Emory Digital Ambassador and an Orientation Leader. As a Digital Ambassador, I answer the avalanche of questions from incoming freshmen from their acceptance letter in the spring until move-in day in the fall.
What do I need to bring to my first day of classes? How should I decorate my dorm? How do I prepare myself to score my dream summer internship?
It's a whirlwind of questions on their Facebook pages, but I love to help!
As an Orientation Leader, I helped nine freshmen navigate their college transition. Whether they needed help with building friendships, living with a roommate, or registering for classes, they could count on me to lend a hand.
If you're a current college student or an incoming freshman with questions, fire away! I'm a college senior with plenty of answers.
Need advice Christian-to-Christian?
There's nothing on earth that I love more than a spiritual retreat. I've served as a retreat leader in six spiritual retreats, presenting speeches about living in faith as a Christian and guiding small group discussion.
Which virtues can I improve in my life? How can I be a voice of Christ in my community? How does God still love me when I keep failing Him over and over again? What can I do to be a channel of God's peace?
I'd never pretend to be perfect, but God doesn't call perfect people to be his trumpets. Trust me, I've told God over and over that this isn't want I'm supposed to do, but He keeps whispering back, "Preach my Word." Now here I am, ready to answer my calling to be a spiritual resource.
If you have any questions about your faith, know that I'm here for you. I'll never judge you, and I'll always say a prayer for you. Not a Christian? That's a-okay with me! Lots of spiritual advice transcends the boundaries of religion. Just let me know so I can write my response with that context in mind.
Need advice as a sorority member or potential new member?
I could talk about my sorority for hours, which is why I ended up dedicating a whole chunk of my blog to sorority life. I've been that hopeful-yet-terrified PNM walking into recruitment. I've been the big sis proudly watching her little slay life as the queen of the business school. I've been the recruitment decorations chair managing six Day Chairs and a Decorations Committee (and had six other positions in my sorority now that I come to think of it). I've answered all the PNM jitters questions and many questions from sisters as the years have gone by:
What do I wear for spring recruitment? How can I give a killer clue week without going broke? What new traditions can I bring to my sorority fam? Should I live in the sorority lodge this year? How can I make my sorority an asset to my resume?
Consider me your unofficial digital big sis. Whether you're the potential new member thinking about recruitment or a sorority member taking in every new adventure of sorority life, invite me along your journey! I'm happy to help.
Need advice for your next celebration?
I believe in celebrating events big and small as often as possible! Organizing a bachelorette party, a girls trip to Austin, or a Bachelor viewing party? I've been there, y'all! I have loads of tips and tricks to help make your celebration a hit.
What food should I serve at my Super Bowl party? What should I do during my vacation in Destin, Florida? How can I be the best maid of honor ever?
I take life one celebration at a time, which leads to a lot of weekend adventures and an entire drawer dedicated to confetti, cocktail napkins, and cookie cutters. Of course that's not counting the massive bags of holiday decorations, streamers, and balloons... It's casual. As the mom of my apartment, I'm always finding something to celebrate!
What are you celebrating these days, and how can I lend a hand? I'll be your party planner from afar!
